Best Fabrics for Newborn Baby Clothes: What Parents and Kidswear Brands Should Look For

By the Umora Fashion team · October 7, 2026 · 2 min read

White cotton newborn bodysuit with baby booties

A newborn’s skin is thinner and more sensitive than an adult’s, and babies can’t tell us when something itches. That is why the best newborn clothes are chosen as much for what you can’t see — fabric, seams and finishing — as for how cute they look.

1. Soft, breathable cotton comes first

For everyday newborn wear — jhablas, vests, bodysuits and rompers — soft, breathable cotton is the gold standard. It lets air circulate, absorbs moisture and helps regulate body temperature, which matters a lot in India’s climate.

  • Single jersey cotton — soft and stretchy, ideal for bodysuits and T-shirts.
  • Interlock cotton — thicker and smoother on both sides, lovely for rompers and cooler days.
  • Cotton muslin — very light and airy, popular for swaddles and summer wear.

2. Solid, gentle colours

Many parents prefer newborn sets in solid, soft colours — whites, creams and pastels. Good dyeing and colour-fastness matter: the colour should stay put through frequent washing.

3. Seams and finishing

  • Flat, soft seams that don’t rub against the skin
  • Covered or soft neck finishes — envelope necks on bodysuits make dressing easier
  • No scratchy labels — printed labels or soft, well-placed tags

4. Easy fastenings

Newborns are changed many times a day. Front-opening jhablas with ties, envelope necks and snap buttons at the bottom make dressing quick and stress-free for parents.

5. Winter knits for babies

For cooler weather, soft baby-wool and acrylic-blend knits keep little ones warm. Knitted caps, mittens, booties, cardigans and blankets complete a winter set. Look for soft yarns, secure buttons and no loose threads.

6. Wash before first wear

Always wash new baby clothes once before use with a mild detergent. It removes any finishing residue and softens the fabric further.

For kidswear brands: what builds trust

  • Consistent sizing across batches and an accurate size chart
  • Fabric and colour consistency from reorder to reorder
  • Gift-ready newborn sets that photograph well for online listings
  • Retail-ready packing for marketplaces and stores

At Umora, we have made infant and kidswear since 2004, and we run our own kidswear brand, Little Angels. We make for brands the way we make for ourselves.

Frequently asked questions

Which fabric is best for newborn babies?

Soft, breathable cotton — such as single jersey, interlock or muslin — is the best everyday fabric for newborns.

What is a jhabla?

A jhabla is a traditional Indian front-opening newborn top, usually in soft cotton with ties, that is easy to put on a newborn.

Should I wash baby clothes before first use?

Yes. Washing new baby clothes once with a mild detergent removes finishing residue and softens the fabric.

Are woollen clothes safe for babies?

Soft baby-wool or acrylic-blend knits are fine for cooler weather, as long as yarns are soft, buttons are secure and there are no loose threads.
