India has never had more D2C clothing brands — and most of them start the same way: a strong idea, a small budget and a hunt for a manufacturer who will take them seriously. Here is how private label manufacturing works, and how to avoid the most common first-order mistakes.
What is private label manufacturing?
Private label means the manufacturer makes the garment, and your brand goes on it — your neck label, hang tags, packaging and identity. You own the brand and the customer; the manufacturer owns the production.
What is MOQ, and why does it matter?
MOQ (minimum order quantity) is the smallest order a factory will accept for a style, colour or fabric. Traditional factories set high MOQs because fabric, dyeing and machine set-up have fixed costs. For a new brand, high MOQs mean blocked cash and dead stock.
Low-MOQ models — where the manufacturer works with ready fabrics, existing colour ranges or blanks — let young brands test designs in small quantities, learn what sells, and then scale the winners.
The typical journey from idea to delivery
- Brief — share references, target price, quantities and launch date.
- Tech pack — measurements, fabric, GSM, trims, print or embroidery placement, labels and packing.
- Sampling — a first sample to check fit, fabric and finish. Expect one or two rounds.
- Approval and PO — lock the approved sample as the “gold seal”.
- Production — cutting, stitching or knitting, decoration, checking.
- Packing and dispatch — labelled, tagged and packed for your warehouse or marketplace.
Five mistakes first-time founders make
- Skipping the tech pack. “Like this photo” leads to surprises. Write it down.
- Launching too many styles. Start with 3–5 strong products in a few colours.
- Ignoring size ratios. Your best-selling sizes should get the most stock.
- Choosing only on price. A cheap garment that comes back as a return is the most expensive one.
- Not visiting the factory. One visit tells you more than fifty messages.
Blanks: the fastest way to start
If you sell printed or embroidered merchandise, ready-to-brand blanks — such as round neck T-shirts with only a size label — let you launch in days, not months. Print on demand, add your own label and scale when your designs prove themselves.
What to expect from a good manufacturing partner
Honest feedback on design, colour palettes, pricing and deadlines. If a partner tells you a date can’t be met, that honesty is protecting your launch.
